What is CDCP?

CDCP Cost Structure and Coverage Breakdown
Dental coverage may be partial or full; the level is determined based on your family’s household adjusted income. A detailed breakdown of this is provided below:
CDCP Fees: Additional Charges
It’s important to know that the entirety of your treatment may not be covered. There may be additional charges you need to consider
Cost of Services Exceeding CDCP Fees
Thefees CDCP will pay for services covered under the plan and rendered by the provider is based on the fee guide that CDCP has developed for this purpose. These fees may and often dodiffer from provincial fee guides. If your dental clinic charges more than the CDCP fees, you will be responsible for paying the difference.
Services Not Covered by CDCP
Some dental services, such as cosmetic procedures or treatments outside the plan’s scope, are not covered by the CDCP. You will need to pay for these services out of pocket.
Co-Payment
A co-payment is the portion of the dental care cost that you must pay out of pocket. Your co-payment percentage depends on your adjusted family net income and is calculated based on the CDCP established fees.
Note:Co-payment or fees not covered are paid directly to the dental office.
What Services are Covered?
Various dental treatments fall under the umbrella of CDCP coverage, such as:
Preauthorization Requirements
Certain dental services under the CDCP require preauthorization to ensure that the treatment will be covered under the plan. Preauthorization is a process where prior approval is required for treatment recommended by your dentist before the treatment is provided.
Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) started covering limited orthodontic treatments in 2025, but only for medically necessary, severe cases affecting function, not for cosmetic reasons. Preauthorization is required and there is specific clinical criteria for children (under 18). Even stricter rules apply for adults, with potential co-pays based on income.
Key Treatments Requiring Preauthorization:
- Prosthodontics: Partial dentures, complete dentures, and immediate dentures.
- Restorative: Crowns, bridges (if applicable), and potentially complex fillings.
- Periodontal: Additional units of scaling and root planing (deep cleaning).
- Oral Surgery: Specific surgical procedures beyond basic extractions.
- Endodontics: Root canals (if complex).
- Sedation: Deeper levels of sedation.
