dental implants replacing missing teeth

Missing teeth getting you down? No one wants to miss out on their favourite foods or feel too embarrassed to smile. Dental implants are an excellent option to simultaneously improve your oral health and confidence!  So, what exactly are dental implants? How do they work?

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial teeth that are made from a biocompatible material. A titanium screw will be surgically implanted into your jawbone and will fuse with your body through a process called osseointegration. This process allows your body to accept the implant as your new tooth. This is also why implants feel very similar to your natural teeth.

The Benefits of Receiving Dental Implants

There are numerous reasons why implants are the ideal solution. Not only are they going to improve how you feel about yourself, but they also improve your oral health. When you replace missing teeth, you reduce the areas for bacteria to grow. Compared to other dental procedures, such as bridges and dentures, an implant will feel much more comfortable. A bonus is that it’s fully secured into your jawbone, so you won’t have to worry about it falling out!

How Do Implants Work?

First, our Edmonton dentist will remove the tooth if it hasn’t already been extracted. You may need a bone graft if you do not have sufficient bone structure. A titanium screw will then be placed into your jawbone and will take a few months to heal. During this time, your body will gradually accept the screw as your tooth’s new roots. After you have healed, we will place your permanent crown to replace your tooth.

The total time will vary depending on each individual and their unique case. The process can take up to nine months in some cases. If you have any questions, contact our Edmonton dental clinic for more details.

What Happens After a Dental Implant is Placed?

Congratulations! You are on your way to having your smile restored. In the first few days, you may feel some discomfort and minor pain. Do not worry! The pain will subside within a few days. If you have any concerns, please contact your dentist. While you can eat all of the things you love again, it’s recommended to eat soft foods for the first couple of days.

It’s important to take extra good care of your teeth (real and artificial). By practicing good oral hygiene and regularly visiting your dentist, you can enjoy the appearance and function of your new smile for many years to come!
